Cops nab 13 illegal cockfight aficionados in Gapan City


GAPAN CITY, Nueva Ecija – Authorities arrested 13 persons after they were caught holding an illegal cockfight or "tupada" underneath bamboo trees in the village of Maburak here Sunday afternoon.

In a report Monday, Lt. Col. Alexie Desamito, city police chief, identified the suspects as Romeo Angeles, 63; Guilbert Cervantes, 46; Edwin Antonio, 37; Jerry Sacro, 52; Ildefonso Ganay, 48; Teodoro Dimalanta, 61; Jesus Angeles, 63;

Rolando Leonardo, 54; Estanislao de Guzmany Acosta, 71: Montano Concepcion, 61; John Michael Vincent Torres, 21; Christofer Guantic, 44; and Nelson Mabilin, 48; from different villages of this city.

Some of the suspects tried to elude arrest by jumping into the river but were also caught.

Some bettors have scampered and managed to escape, Desamito added.

The raid was carried out after receiving a tip from a concerned citizen that the cockfighting, locally known as “tupada”, was being conducted in the lot owned by the Angeleses.

Police seized three live and a dead fighting cocks, two pieces of gaff (tari) and PHP2,380 bet money.

A criminal complaint for violation of Presidential Decree 1602 or illegal gambling is being readied against the suspects. (PNA)
