NHA to construct dormitory for IP students in Pangasinan

ASINGAN, Pangasinan – The National Housing Authority (NHA) is set to construct a two-storey student dormitory in this town this year for students from the indigenous communities.

Ito ay para hindi na mahirapan ang mga estudyante na nanggagaling pa sa malalayong lugar. ‘Yong building ay nasa mismong compound na ng school (This is for the students who are coming from far-flung areas so it wouldn’t be so inconvenient to them. The building will be within the school compound),” NHA Ilocos Region and Cordillera Administrative Region manager engineer Maria Belinda Sevalla said in a phone interview on Thursday.

Sevalla said the students' dormitory project costs PHP20 million. The lot is a property of the Pangasinan State University.

“Approximately, there will be 14 rooms with 64 beds for the IP (Indigenous People) students,” she added.

Meanwhile, the local government unit of Asingan proposes a resettlement assistance program for the residents in the town whose houses were built on dangerous areas such as waterways, or those who were affected by government infrastructure projects such as road widening.

Sevalla said NHA will develop a package for the resettlement assistance program in the town with a PHP25-million grant for land development, and construction of 54 duplex housing units with a modal lot size of 50 square meters and floor area of 21 sqm.

"Ito may pagkakataon na yung mga kababayan natin na talagang very less fortunate na wala talagang tinitirhan. Halimbawa andyan lang sila sa silong ng mga tulay, sa ibaba ng mga irigasyon o mga informal settlers na magkaroon kayo ng decent na bahay (This is an opportunity for our less fortunate townmates who do not really have their own houses. For example, those who are living under the bridge, below irrigations, or the informal settlers, for them to have their own decent homes)," Asingan Mayor Carlos Lopez Jr. said in a statement issued on Thursday.

Lopez said there will be a committee that will evaluate whether the families will avail themselves of free or low-cost housing. (PNA)
